Girl World #9: Queen Martha, Equal Credit, Lost Women in Science, Cowboy Boots, Netflix Holiday Movies, Brat, a Mariah Carey Bar + More

If you want to be happy for a decade, get a dog.

Welcome to Girl World, a weekly newsletter inspired by Barbieland serving up inspirational content, need-to-know information, women in action, and a few bits and bites. We’re women—of course we can wear pink and crush our business goals. A Late August Media publication.

Happy November, Girl World. We’re certain you crushed your Halloween outfits last weekend and are fully embracing everything cozy and fall this weekend like we are. Don’t forget to change those clocks back or just celebrate that your stove clock is finally right again. We see you girlies putting up your Christmas trees and we salute you. You go Glen Coco. We’ll be waiting until after Thanksgiving here, but fully appreciate the dedication to all things Christmas.

We’ve been in quite a TV drought since Tell Us Lies ended, but Netflix has delivered a solid roster of must-see TV and we’re sharing our favorites: The Diplomat Season 2 is here—binging ASAP. The Martha documentary is amazing and full of great quotes and fun facts. We love that Queen. Simone Biles Rising has new episodes and we’ll be jamming to the Olivia Rodrigo Guts World Tour in our free time. Then, there’s Time Cut. It’s set in 2003. It’s nostalgic, but they didn’t commit to the thin eyebrows and Maybelline Cloud Mousse foundation so it’s not entirely realistic. JK.

First time voters at Howard University share why it’s important to vote.

Election Day is Tuesday! Please vote. If you don’t normally vote (or only sometimes vote), make this year the exception to the rule. Trust us, your vote matters.

✌️ What We’re Doing This Weekend

It’s GOTV (get out the vote) weekend so we’re doing two things: early voting and making calls in support of VP Kamala Harris in a battleground state. If you want to get involved in the last weekend before Election Day, find a volunteer opportunity near you or volunteer for a local candidate in your area!

The Eras Tour Indy dates have arrived so we feel a grainy live stream is in our future. It’s the last show in the U.S. and it makes us a little sad. And, shout out to Girl World friend, Kristen J., for standing in line and trying to get us tickets yesterday. It didn’t happen, but sharing is caring. Girl World continues to be an awesome place to live.

It’s finally consistently cool enough to begin baking sourdough bread again. We’re starting with our favorite variation: everything bagel-spiced sourdough bread. We don’t let the discard go to waste so we’ll be baking these sourdough discard crackers and using a little extra starter for these cinnamon rolls.

Last, but not least, we’re grabbing fall flowers from Trader Joes to make a DIY flower arrangement. If you love flowers like us, pick up a few different flowers and some filler greens from TJs. You’ll get a beautiful flower arrangement that lasts around two weeks for less than $20. It’s the small things that can bring you joy throughout your week.
