Our love for em dashes are 100% human

Welcome to Girl World, a weekly newsletter inspired by Barbieland serving up inspirational content, need-to-know information, women in action, and a few bits and bites. We’re women—of course we can wear pink and crush our business goals. A Late August Media publication.

The economy is incredibly unstable right now so we’re all being more mindful of our spending. As we’ve seen over the last two years, we are voting with our pocketbooks. Where we spend—or don’t spend— our hard-earned income matters.

In honor of all of the amazing women we know and love, we’re rounding up 10 women-owned businesses we’re spending our money at:

Beis — for luggage and travel goods

The Sill—for plants

Supergoop—for summer sunscreen needs

Blueland—for cleaning supplies

Thirdlove—for intimates, bras, and undies

Rare Beauty—for makeup

Fable—for pet goods

Violette FR—another amazing makeup choice

Tia Health—for digital and in-person whole body health care for women

Megababe—for body care needs (highly recommend: Thigh Rescue for the summer)

Honorable mention: Christina from DessertforTwo.com is also the recipe developer and founder of beanrecipes.com. Beans might be having a moment soon—at least they’ll be delicious.

  1. Julia Louis-Dreyfus took 10 mins to settle our biggest disputes. The laugh we didn’t know we needed this week.

  2. The Tory Burch Foundation pledged an ambitious goal this week: to support women entrepreneurs whose revenue totals $1 billion by 2030. They announced their goal at their inaugural founders breakfast event, which also honored Martha Stewart. Women are great investments.

  3. Founder Films recently featured Melanie Perkins’, Founder of Canva, journey to 135M users. Bookmark it for inspiration viewing.

  4. F1 women are gunning for the top spots in the sport thanks to the F1 Academy, a female-only racing series founded by Formula 1 in 2023 with an eye toward preparing its drivers to aim higher.

  5. Great news: The SAVE Act, which would make it difficult for some women to vote, is DOA in the Senate.

  6. Our Pitch Perfect-loving heart jumped at the chance to read Anna Camp’s Marie Claire feature.

Lucy Guo recently unseated Taylor Swift as the World’s Youngest Self-Made Woman Billionaire at 30 years old with her ownership shares in a company she founded and was fired by her co-founder from (over a disagreement in how the company should be run). After leaving Scale AI, she started her own venture capital firm and then went on to found Passes, which is similar to Patreon and OnlyFans, a platform for creators and celebrities to connect with fans who pay for online chats and videos. If you follow her on social media, you’ll also notice that she doesn’t miss a workout and finds time to have fun.

Lesson: It’s pretty simple, but somehow so complicated—invest in your life and yourself as much as you invest in your career. You can do both. Perhaps not always at the exact same time. But, not investing in yourself and your life will ultimately lead to burnout or a midlife crisis. Work hard (and smart), but make time for a few workouts and have some fun along the way. It’ll be worth it.

Navel oiling has trended on Tiktok for a while, but does it work?

Therapists are feeling it, too.

Brains are made for change. Let’s invest in our brain health and growth together!

How to select the right weight for your dumbbell workouts. So useful!

All of Rhianna’s Met Gala looks in one place. Always stunning.

Jennifer Aniston’s exact coffee order, because why not. And, she’s usually right about stuff.

Do we need luxury hair brushes? Maybe.

We love the river swimming culture in Switzerland.

There’s an Wednesday-inspired AirBNB in Illinois that we must try this fall.

An introduction to dandyism, a Black fashion style powering the Met Gala.

Glamping near a national park. We’re in.

It’s going to be an alt-girl summer. Ok, but we can still wear our sweater vests, right?

Going Out: Plant sales are on this weekend! We’re supporting a local student club and suggest you try to find a local group, organization or business to support before you head to Home Depot. Head to a cozy dinner with a friend or two. Make a reservation for Sunday brunch. And, head to the movies for Thunderbolts. Honorable mention: Sinners (it’s considered a horror movie, but we’ve heard its worth it).

Watching: Miss Austen on PBS and the Met Gala red carpet on Monday

Listening: (Spice) Girl Power with Spice Girls’ Geri Halliwell

Reading: Great Big Beautiful Life by Emily Henry

Moving our Bodies: We’re walking with a weighted vest now. TikTok convinced us. We’re in desperate need of a great leg day. And, we’re back on our 90-minute Sunday yoga sessions.
