Girl World #2: Kamala Girl Bossed, Taylor Being Taylor, Target, Selena, It Shoes and More

It's been a big week for Girl World. Buckle up.

Welcome to Girl World, a weekly newsletter inspired by Barbieland serving up inspirational content, need-to-know information, women in action, and a few bits and bites. We’re women—of course we can wear pink and crush our business goals. A Late August Media publication.

It’s been a big week in Girl World. Let’s break it down, shall we? VP Kamala Harris absolutely Girl Bossed Donald Trump all over that stage during Tuesday night’s Presidential Debate. Our Queen, Taylor Swift, delivered the ultimate last word though by endorsing Kamala while representing us childless cat and dog ladies—because our worth isn’t tied to motherhood, marriage, jobs, or any other measurement society puts on us. We’re worthy. Period.

Women absolutely dominated at MTV’s Music Video Awards the next night—including the edgy red carpet looks, Megan Thee Stallion’s amazing hosting gig, the fun live performances, and female artists absolutely cleaning up across all of the awards.

The energy this week feels good, right? The week was definitely long, but “things” are moving. If you’re not already caught up with season 2 of Tell Me Lies on Hulu, add that to your weekend watch list because it’s SO good. And, can we have a moment of silence for the Secret Lives of Mormon Wives on Hulu? There’s so much to unpack here and we couldn’t stop watching. After binging it, we turned off the TV ASAP and cracked open the new book from 831 Stories, Big Fan, which tells the story of a political strategist named Maya who was tainted by a scandalous ex and finds an unexpected career detour when her teenage boy band crush offers a second chance at the spotlight, and maybe something more.

💌 The Weekly 6

  1. Aubrey Plaza is having an amazing year and she’s playing an active role in developing her characters—including infusing her heritage.

  2. Want to achieve your goals? You gotta harness the power of dopamine.

  3. We love our girl Selena Gomez and her Vanity Fair cover story is a must-read.

  4. Gender Bias in STEM may start in kindergarten. 62% of boys named STEM subjects their favorite, and only 37% of girls did the same. We’ve got some work to do.

  5. Nicole Kidman won the Volpi Cup for Best Actress at the Venice Film Festival and crushed it in The Perfect Couple. The Atlantic takes a look at her work and efforts to look for the deeper, more complex layers in her characters.

  6.  What you need to know about breast density.

🤩 Women to Watch

Gwyneth Paltrow is making moves and pivoting Goop. It will move away from wellness and double down on food—including expanding Goop Kitchen.

Sending love to Kate Middleton who announced she completed chemotherapy recently.

Halle Berry is still the only Black woman to win an Oscar for Best Actress—and she used her Marie Clare cover story to spotlight it.

✌️ What We’re Doing This Weekend

Summer might be winding down, but we’re not ready to give up on summer produce yet so we’ll be trekking to the farmer’s market for another late summer haul. But, it’s officially our favorite season: apple season and we’ll be stocking up. We’ve got our eye on these mini apple pies. Emily in Paris (Netflix) Season 4, Part 2 is here and we’ll be binging it. We’re grabbing a new fall novel to get into the season. First up: The Modern Girl’s Guide to Magic.

Is it the weekend if you don’t go to Target? We’re picking up some of Halloween snake themed dinnerware in hopes its a promo for Reputation (Taylor’s Version). Please, Taylor? And, we’ll be looking into our ticket options for a Dua Lipa concert. Ok, and still thinking about those Sabrina Carpenter tickets, too. Not a good weekend for the credit cards. 🙂
